ADHD is caused by changes in brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals help send messages between nerve cells in the brain. The neurotransmitter dopamine (pronounced: doe -puh-meen), for example, stimulates the brain's attention centers. Children who live in old buildings in which lead still exists in the plumbing or in lead paint that has been painted over may be at risk. Attention disorders are caused by refined sugar or food additives, or that symptoms of ADHD are exacerbated by sugar or food additives.

Stimulants are the best-known treatments - they've been used for more than 50 years in the treatment of ADHD.

Use a chart to list goals and track positive behaviors, then reward your child's efforts. Be sure the goals are realistic.
