Do you have permission to be successful?

By: Jaco de Villiers

I want to ask you two questions. They have simple Yes/No answers. Yet, please think about your answers. Maybe even write them down, on the edge of your year planner…

Do you have the permission to be successful?

Has anyone given you the OK to be yourself?

And your answers are? You might have said yes, because you argue that no one needs to give you permission to be successful. You are in charge, so you will be yourself.

Or you answered a feeble no… because no one ever told you that you can be successful. No one ever gave you the thumbs up to say you are ok.

So why do these two question illicit such a strong emotional response from you? Why did you heart cringe with that sudden stab when I asked these two questions?

We do not believe that we have permission to be successful. We look at the media and the world around us, and suddenly we are not good enough anymore. You are thinking that the people around you don’t like you. You see and hear people speak badly of you. If someone asks you to define success, you don’t know the answer to it, because you are too scared of being wrong.

I know these are harsh words, yet they are the real!

What makes this tragic is that you have all the permission in the world to be successful. It is not the people ‘out there’ that need to give it to you. You, and only you, can give it to you…

Through some very every day set of events, you start to believe that you don’t have the authority to be successful. Somehow you came to believe that only certain people can go home at night after work and be happy. Because of something that you ‘see’ suddenly you are not good enough. And through it all, it is someone else’s fault that you can’t earn more, be happy, enjoy life…

Tomorrow morning when you get out of bed, and you dawdle to the bathroom, please look at yourself in the mirror. Smile back at the person you see, because you are unique. Give yourself the thumbs up. Say out aloud:” I am going to be the best person I can be. I am giving myself permission.”

If you still believe you need someone else’s approval, then you have mine. I am giving you permission to be successful in your life. You have my thumbs up to be the best that you can be!
