Flextime Work Scheduling - Part 4

By: cdmohatta

This is continued from part three of this article series. Please read that before you read this article.

Higher employee morale & enthusiasm:
As employees have control over their work timings, they have less reasons to crib. Their traveling troubles reduce and they also get to spend more quality time with their families. Hence stress level reduces. They feel they have more input and control over their work life. All this translates into less hatred and lower hostility towards the workplace and increased enthusiasm in office work.

Better balance between work-life & family-life:
Flextime is a very good option for working parents who can co-ordinate their timings with each other and take care of the child better. As per Tara Weiss (2007, www.forbes.com), "Maternity leave is old news for companies looking to retain talent. Now it's dad's turn. KPMG is among a growing number of companies with programs typically aimed at mothers--like telecommuting from home, working flexible schedules and taking leave when a new baby arrives--who are also focusing on fathers." Such steps taken by companies help their employees to spend quality time with their families. Employees are happier as a result. Laurie Lopez, a manager at Winter, Wyman HR Contract Solutions in Boston says, "The need for a varied work schedule affects both men and women, but caring for the children still falls heavily on the mother. Nearly half of the workforce is now female, and about 85% of working women are, or will become, working mothers. This makes flex-time a key issue for many women" (Scott Reeves, 2006, www.forbes.com).

Benefits of flextime work arrangements

Lower traffic congestion during peak hours:
If more and more companies adopt the flextime work arrangement, the peak hour traffic which happens around 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM will get distributed to other parts of the day. This could lead to less traffic on the roads and less commuting time for employees. Who wouldn't like an hour less on the road, every day? This will also lead to less cases of road rage among the employees and cause stress level due to commuting to reduce.

Decrease in tardiness:
Usually people tend to reach office late due to traffic problems or they sometimes leave earlier due to family commitments and other reasons. When employees have flexibility with their work timings, they can adjust their work hours around these other issues in life and devote the required full time in office. This will reduce wastage of time and hence result in less tardiness. This is an obvious benefit of flextime.

Higher employee recruitment:
To attract new talent, companies can offer flextime work schedules in their job offers to prospective candidates. This can help them gain a definite advantage over their competitors by attracting very good people who do not want to work a traditional 9-5 work week. In 2002, the federal government was caught in one of its worst talent crunches ever. But there was increased interest in people towards working for the CIA, FBI, and Internal Revenue Service, and hence the feds went on a MBA hiring binge. To attract budding officials, the feds offered signing bonuses, juicy raises, and flextime work arrangements (Ana Mantica, 2002, www.businessweek.com).
