Getting a Medical Coding Job

The choices for employment as a medical coder are extremely varied. But most of them lead back to the same place - a medical coding job with a hospital.

Fortunately, unless you live in the middle of nowhere, openings for medical coding jobs should be plentiful. For the last few years the amount of trained medical coders has not been enough to satisfy the demand. This is great news for a new medical coder searching for employment.

But how do you actually find a medical coding job?

Naturally, you can look in the classified ad section of your local newspaper in search of job opportunities. However, you are constantly at the mercy of the timing of postings. It is not the preferred method. You should be aware that there are many medical coding industry publications where medical coding jobs are consistently posted. Advance Magazine, an AHIMA (American Health Information management Association) publication, is a wonderful source. Also, in this day and age, there are multitudes of medical coding job boards devoted to opportunities in the medical coding line of work.

If you're not reserved, one of the best ways we can think of to find medical coding job opportunities is to call or visit the medical records department of hospitals or clinics in your area. Request a meeting with the medical records director or supervisor and briefly introduce yourself. Locating the best medical coding job requires a little effort on your part. Medical coding employment can be found in various organizations, such as:

- Large hospitals

- Private hospitals

- Government hospitals

- Physician groups

- Nursing homes & rehabilitation centers

- Law firms and consulting firms

- Insurance companies

Hospitals tend to be extra strict and bureaucratic in the way they hire medical coders than smaller, more nimble medical clinics or physician groups. Though, their pay rates are often higher.

Hospitals are inclined to insist upon a greater level of inpatient coding expertise and certification. Then again, big hospitals often provide medical transcription employment benefits which far outweigh those offered by nearly all small organizations. Some of these benefits may include overtime pay, flex-time, sick leave, paid vacation, and perhaps most importantly - generous health care benefits. Plus, if you are interested in pursuing a long-term career as a Medical Records Director or Hospital Administrator, a big hospital system will normally supply more opportunities for promotion.

Medical clinics and physicians offices tend to operate under relatively normal business times. This allows medical coders employed by these organizations to enjoy a traditional and fairly stable medical coding work schedule. However, if flexibility is important to you, you should probably look for a medical coding job in a hospital setting. Almost all hospitals are open 24 hours a day 7 days per week and typically provide significant flexibility to medical coders in terms of flex schedules and shift work.
