Have A Spider Phobia? You Can Overcome It

By: Alan B. Densky, CH

It is typical for all people to experience some fears, but suffering from a phobia is a more significant issue. A phobia is an extreme fear that one can't seem to control. Phobias are considered to be a variety of anxiety disorder, and often create nervousness and panic attacks in a sufferer. When someone has a phobia, they become so anxious to stay away from their fear that it affects their daily lives and their ability to function in life.

Among the most common phobias are claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces, acrophobia, the fear of heights, and arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Arachnophobia is the number one most common phobia. Although many people are afraid of spiders, those with arachnophobia possess an abnormal amount of fear. Even a photograph or realistic rendering of an arachnid can make some people uneasy. Some arachnophobes have anxiety attacks or get hysterical at the sight of an arachnid. They might do anything in order to get away from a spider; for instance, people with an extreme case of arachnophobia might attempt to get out of a moving car if they see a spider near them.

Sufferers often feel humiliated by their unrestrained responses. Other people and even the sufferers themselves might see their behavior as irrational. Their anxiety over spiders and their reaction to arachnids may escalate into other problems as well. Arachnophobia and other phobias often lead to another phobia known as agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia can arise when a person is afraid of being in any potentially stressful area or situation. For someone with arachnophobia, this means avoiding any area a spider could be living, unfamiliar places, and even resisting leaving the house or going outside altogether. This can badly disturb a person's day-to-day life. A person may be afraid of having panic attacks or humiliating him or herself by losing control. Many people find themselves chronically stressed out over these feelings.

People with phobias frequently struggle to control their fears. This is due to the fact that the root of the problem lies at the unconscious level of the mind; so conscious willpower or effort does not work to control a phobia. A phobia is best dealt with at the unconscious level, which is why Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the best phobia treatments.

There are multiple different hypnosis programs available for curing phobias. Most utilize conventional hypnosis techniques that rely on the use of post-hypnotic suggestions with highly specific wording to work against fears. These days, post-hypnotic suggestions rarely work because most people have a tendency to question everything. And since today's generation tends to do the opposite of what they are told, post-hypnotic suggestions are ineffective and they experience a polar response.

Ericksonian hypnosis therapy is different from traditional hypnosis because it uses indirect suggestions that are hidden in conversation. That makes them hard for the mind to pick out and reject, so they will usually make it through to the unconscious level and be adopted.

The procedure typically begins by using hypnosis to make you feel completely calm and receptive. Then, instead of merely "telling" your unconscious what to do, Ericksonian techniques use stories and metaphors to steer your mind into a desirable line of thinking.

NLP techniques work by honing in on the specific thought process that creates an irrational phobia and using it to extinguish the fear. Because of this, NLP will work on all phobias.

People respond much better to the combination of NLP and Ericksonian techniques than to conventional hypnosis because instead of getting orders, the unconscious mind is persuaded to follow a new, more logical line of reasoning. These hypnosis programs work especially well for people who are logical, critical thinkers and people who like to think on their own.

You do not need a different hypnosis program for each different phobia. One program that includes several sessions containing the ideal combination of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP techniques can treat any phobia. Furthermore, an effective program will work for every user. The combination of different techniques in several different sessions guarantees success for anyone who uses them. By completing each step of the program, people are often amazed at how quickly they overcome their fears.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP focus on changing irrational behaviors and fears into calm, collected responses. For many individuals struggling with disabling fears such as a phobia, this is a life-changing treatment. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for beating fears and anxieties to live a fuller, better life.

A phobia is an illogical worry that is seemingly beyond one's restraint. The fear of spiders is termed Arachnophobia, and this is the most common phobia. Hypnotherapists and NLP Practitioners have discovered techniques that almost seem magical in their ability to easily extinguish phobias.
