How to Carry on a Conversation with a Guy

It's sometimes difficult to have a meaningful conversation with a guy, doubly so when that member of the opposite sex happens to be your boyfriend. Guys you like can be tough to chat with. They're lumpy, sometimes crude, and often they just seem to exist on an entirely different planet. If you've run out of things to say, here are some suggestions to start a conversation and keep a conversation going with a guy - even if he's your boyfriend.

ASK ABOUT HIS HOBBIES - Chances are he's interested in some activity to wile away his spare time (the spare time he's not spending with you, anyway) and this is a great opportunity to find out what this activity is and how he goes about it. If he loves football, show interest in his football and I guarantee he'll like you more.

ASK ABOUT WORK - For most guys, their job is a critical component of their identity, making it an interesting topic to keep a conversation alive. They often consider themselves in terms of their occupation first, with all other considerations running a distant second. Inquiring about the intimate details of his day-to-day existence can be a great way to forge closer ties and show your interest in one of the areas of his life that he considers extremely important.

ASK ABOUT HIS FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM - Typically, most guys live and die with their sports team. Find out which ones he follows, and try to show an interest. Ask if they won last night or how your guy's favorite player is doing. He should take the conversation over from there for a while, especially if his team is in a slump or on a good hot streak. Good conversation skills is about interest, attention, and understanding.

ASK HOW HIS FRIENDS ARE DOING - But don't probe, don't push, and remember that the relationship he has with his friends is entirely different than the relationship you have with yours. They are less of an emotional support system and more of a pack suitable to witness and accomplish things together. It is okay to ask how a particular friend of his is doing, but do not psychoanalyze what's said about his friend's actions or emotional state!

FEEL FREE TO TALK ABOUT YOURSELF - This isn't so much a conversation starter or a topic! Often, most guys prefer to listen to you than to go on about themselves. If you have an amusing story or anecdote to share, or some kind of stressful event that you want to get off of your chest, by all means do so. Chances are your boyfriend or the guy you like won't mind hearing about, and it is a great way to keep a conversation going.
