I want to move Mountains!: Understanding the Function of Meditation

By: Breian Malupa

When we need to maintain our bodies to keep it in good working order, we have the resources around us. For example when we are sick we go and visit a doctor, when we have a tooth ache we go and see a dentist, dermatologist, podiatrist, eye specialist, physiotherapist, etc… If it doesn’t concern our bodies for example car maintenance, we go to a mechanic, others are plumber, electrician, builders, accountant, etc…

We can look after our health by eating right and exercising. We can look after our teeth by brushing our teeth and we can look after our skin by moisturizing and using sunscreen. We can look after our digestive system by taking fibre, etc… We regularly go to our mechanic and doctor or dentist for a check up or tune up,… when was the last time we went to tune up our brain?... When was the last time we went and got a check up to see that everything is in perfect working order?... Everything in our life revolves in this one vital organ… our brain… and we forget to look after it.

Apart from nutrition, meditation is the exercise for the mind. Just like an exercise where you have strength training and cardiovascular training, there are also 2 forms of exercises for the mind; meditation and cognitive (thinking). Cognitive is like strength training, learning new informations, problem solving, creative thinking, recalling informations etc… Meditation is like cardiovascular training, lowering brain frequencies and chemical regulation in the brain.

Just like nutrition, certain foods are for maintaining your bones, some foods for your skin, some for the brain and some for your muscles. Certain exercises will maintain certain muscle groups, maintain bone density and regulate blood circulation (cardiovascular training). Meditation is also similar. Certain meditation are for breaking habits, some are for personal success, some are for spiritual enlightenment, some are for manifesting, some are for manipulating energy for healing and blessing, other forms of meditations are for relieving pain and stress. It will eventually depend on what you want to gain from the experience. It is good to try as much different form of meditations, understand its purpose and then use what is appropriate for your own personal needs.

Not exercising and not eating healthy is not a mandatory law, it is an individual’s decision if he or she would perform it. On the other hand, if one does decide to eat healthy and exercise regularly, the reward is a life of general well being. The same goes with meditation… the reward is a life of general well being.

A person with a healthy mind is not in search for happiness because he/she experiences happiness every moment. He/she has a clear thinking under a lot of stress. Problems and life stressors hardly penetrates a healthy mind. A healthy mind is not on an emotional rollercoaster, it has total control of its emotions. A healthy mind has a sense of direction in life, even though they cannot see where they are going. A healthy mind is a seed of love and compassion, gratitude and forgiveness… a sense of peace.

Spirituality is a term used to describe the higher experience from our objective world or our limited sensed of reality. Apart from taste, hear, smell, touch and seeing, there is a higher world/plane/consciousness that can be perceived. This can be achieved through certain forms of meditations. Certain form of meditation will open up your so called sixth sense or your third eye. This sixth sense is what makes you perceive the higher plane. The purpose of this is to make you realize and be aware that apart from the physical world you live in, there is a higher form of consciousness that exist. This connection to the higher source is what makes an individual show kindness to one another. It is this connection that is responsible for the love and compassion.

We find ourselves at the crossroads, decisions that needs to be made, problems that needs to be solved. We don’t know what to do, we don’t know what to say, we are lost and we are confused. We long for and in need of assistance, a guidance to show us the way. Reconnect to the higher consciousness/universe/god/source/light through keeping a healthy heart and mind.

You can be strong and at the same time be unfit to run a mile. You can run a mile and at the same time be unable to do chin-ups. You can eat only vegetables and yet at the same time have an iron deficiency… Remember, that each form or different techniques have its own purpose and function. There is no right or wrong with which form of meditation you should learn first. Find what is important to you and go and learn that form of meditation and then experience the other types.
