Integrity for the Religious Leader - Nu Leadership Series

By: Daryl G.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations…”
Matthew 28:19

As the world looks for leadership in an amoral world, religious organizations need to step up. Why are most leaders silent, however? Let’s examine ways to combat “integrity failure” among leaders. Yes, I think we need to change our focus in leadership development. Many churches failure to groom future leaders. This often prevents new leadership styles and innovation to emerge.

Senior leaders resist leaving. Succession planning falters. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations…” Many churches have failed to create a culture that promotes leadership development.

Most people would agree that today’s churches have lots of work to do. Yes, they say they are about leadership development, but actions don’t line up. Simons notes that trust is often undermined when followers repeatedly see their leaders do the opposite of what they say. Credibility is lost.

Given the division in some churches, a member could feel anxious and become fearful in a hostile climate When communication is also poor, it promotes an atmosphere of distrust toward church leaders. Therefore, it can be concluded that followers find it difficult to trust leaders who demonstrate no integrity. Leaders must model good behavior.

Fortunately, organizational culture provides the framework for shaping values and beliefs within an organization. Culture is learned and stimulated through various interactions. Therefore, mentoring of this behavior is needed by religious leaders to followers within their organizations.
