Leading Beyond the Political Machine - Nu Leadership Series

Let’s assume that marriage is a socio-technical system. Roc and Roslez vowed to be faithful and true. During their marriage, Roslez found Roc unfaithful. Nevertheless, Roc demands Roslez’ loyalty since he’s the family leader. What’s a girl to do in a socio-technical system like this?

Let’s focus on the socio-technical system, better known as “man and the political machine.” Lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to conspiracy, tax evasion, and mail fraud charges. Congress scrambled like chickens for political cover. Forty-eight Republicans and twelve Democrats accepted favors from Abramoff. Tom DeLay stepped down from his position. The secret of their downfall is contained in biblical revelation. Pride! You have heard that pride goes before destruction. It is written (Psalms 62:10), “Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.” As our culture accepts miscues by government official, many leaders will be labeled negatively. Leaders, therefore, need to learn to express some humility and kindness in their socio-technical system.

Davis, a management guru, argues there are many precepts that the business world accepts as given, and fixed. Leading people from these attractive, government positions provide ample for opportunity for wrongdoing. A leader must exert control in the group dynamics when there is corruption. Don’t place followers in an awkward situation by letting them deal with a bad leader in your socio-technical system. Deal with the bad guys quickly. Start today!
