Six Steps to a More Meaningful Life

By: Daryl G.

Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Mark 10:21-22

Introduction

With individuals reaching the top of their professions, why do they appear to be so unfulfilled? We would assume that these successful people have their basic needs covered and every desire acquired. If this is the case, why the unhappiness? The media sells us the fantasies of wealth and fame. Yet, daily we see the demise of celebrities, epitomizing outward success. In this acclaimed profession, the character deterioration and personal integrity are often due to breakups in relationships and financial losses. In search for the Great American Dream, some individuals have gained at great personal cost. This reality has a few people trapped by material pursuits: “An individual isn’t successful unless people can see it.” This article explores how to break away from these superficial expectations of society.

Root Causes

Has the quest for superficial success hurt society? According to a CareerBuilder.com survey, 68% of workers reported feeling burned out at the office. Some people are on a mission to acquire those outward possessions that tell others they are successful. John O’Neil, author of The Paradox of Success, argues that chasing after mythic success can take a high toll on one’s health, relationships, and peace of mind. Mythic success relates to outward achievements such as power, prestige, and wealth. Ironically, several are caught up in this vicious cycle that leaves them emotionally drained. Additionally, some feel that once they achieve their intended success they will be forever satisfied. Sadly, many individuals are chasing this empty success. There is a clear biblical example of this concept in Mark 10:17-22. A rich young ruler approaches Jesus Christ with a question. Initially, this wealthy man is confident in this discussion. However, Jesus continues to ask probing questions and challenging statements: “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” Jesus struck at the heart of this man’s superficial life. Unfortunately, this young aristocrat did not anticipate the personal cost of following Jesus. As a matter of fact, Jesus’ own disciples had left their families, fortunes, and a predictable lifestyle to follow Jesus. Likewise, Jesus expected the same commitment from this young man. Therefore, the rich young ruler walked away sorrowful.

When people realize the emptiness of mythic success, their carnal dreams are dashed. This process has been commonly called spirituality. Today’s trends show that individuals are moving toward more spiritual substance. Spiritual formation becomes as important as people’s outward success. Dallas Willard, author of Renovation of the Heart, described spiritual formation as the process by which the human spirit is given a definite form or character. For most individuals, spiritual formation means being more intellectual, well-formed, and abreast of the current events. However, Christians understand the personal transformation of the human soul by the Holy Spirit, renewing one’s spiritual being. This same process is as important as a person’s physical needs. However, this concept is largely omitted by secular society. Individuals who pursue mythic success only may become discontented with their lives.

A Personal Quest

Humanity’s search for significance is not a new endeavor. More than 3,000 years ago, King Solomon, known as the wisest person to ever live, conducted a personal analysis on the truth meaning of life. In fact, it is on of the most intensive studies ever undertaken by a single individual. At the late stages of his life, King Solomon had material possessions that showcased his mythic success: he had influence, power, and wealth. Yet, his quest left him unfilled. King Solomon found his life lacked substances. He wanted more: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” And so it is today, the wrong quest for outward achievement may lead to emptiness because of personal sacrifices. At this stage of spiritual life, you must ask yourself what is really important:

  1. Are you happy with the life that God has given you?
  2. What is most important to you in life?
  3. How much time do you spend doing it?
  4. Would your life change if you had enough money?
  5. What does your family or friends say are your main priorities as they see it?
  6. Would you like to change your current priorities?

Conclusion

Will people ever grow tired of mythic success? Some lose everything in the quest for outward gain. Where do you put most of your energy? Is it work? Wealth? Pleasure? Individuals need to examine their personal values so that they can determine what is important to them. In a nutshell, you must outline your priorities and define what’s really significant. Some people measure success internally while others measure it by wealth, appearance, and position; this analysis is usually done by comparison. Unfortunately, the fallacy is that there are never any consequences. The long-term effects of some trade-offs can impact your marriage, health, relationships, and other life elements. Continuing on this path of superficial achieving will give you temporal relief. However, it can never quench the inner desires of an unfulfilled life.
