The Chances Of Developing Prostate Cancer And What Can You Do By Way Of Prevention

By: Donald Saunders

Over the past few years there has been considerable discussion about prostate cancer and the subject of preventing prostate cancer specifically remains to some extent controversial. Even though, as with the majority of cancers, men are not themselves the cause of the onset of prostate cancer, there are clearly a number of risk factors for developing the disease and there is a great deal which can be done, if not to prevent it, then undoubtedly to lower your risk of developing it.

The first step in preventing prostate cancer is simply to understand that you are at risk of developing the disease and also to understand precisely what the different risk factors are.

There is no question that men who have a family history of prostate cancer are at greater risk and that the risk for someone with a close relative having the disease is about twice that of someone without any family history. With two close relatives this risk increases to around five times that of someone without any family history and if you have three close relatives the risk reaches a staggering ninety-seven percent.

The problem here is that a lot of men are not aware of their family history, commonly because a lot of fathers, grandfathers or brothers have died as a result of other illnesses without ever being aware that they had prostate cancer. This happens because prostate cancer often develops late in life and can be a very slow growing cancer. As a result there is a very good chance of individuals developing other conditions alongside their prostate cancer and it is these other conditions which ultimately result in their death.

Accordingly, if you do not know your family history, then a good point at which to start is to check things out if you can. If this is not possible to do so, then it is probably a good idea to be cautious and believe that the risk might be there rather than simply assume that you are in the clear.

Another important factor is race. African American men for instance are at higher risk than Hispanic men who, in turn, are at greater risk than Caucasian men. For an African American man the risk is roughly sixty percent higher than that for a Caucasian man.

Yet another risk factor is diet and men living in Western countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom are at higher risk as a result of the high fat levels in most Western diets. Here at last is a risk factor which you can do something about and reducing the fat in your diet and eating things like more fresh fruit and vegetables can reduce your risk quite dramatically.

Now, at this point we begin to run into difficulty as, beyond the principle of lowering levels of fat in the diet, opinions begin to differ when it comes to looking at other areas of the diet which could be helpful in preventing prostate cancer.

There is very little doubt that levels of things like minerals and vitamins in your diet can have a dramatic affect on your health generally and will undoubtedly have a part to play when it comes to your prostate health. However, determining precisely which minerals and vitamins play a part is not an easy matter and is a subject all of its own.

Though there is considerable debate about the subject of prostate cancer prevention there can be no doubt that the starting point is to clearly understand the risks involved and, having done this, then there are then many steps which can be taken to reduce these risk significantly.
