The Consequences Of Feelings Of Melancholy In Young Children And Young Adults

By: Alan B. Densky, CH

Depression is a medical condition caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make someone constantly feel negative, sad, aloof, and unmotivated. Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years. It can result from stress, traumatic situations, or nothing at all. Depression can affect people of all ages, including teens and even young children.

Children and teens often suffer from depression, which leaves families with questions such as: what causes it, and what treatments are available? Fortunately, depression is treatable and some of the most effective depression therapies are in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

In the past, it was thought that children could not experience depression, but in reality, depression affects people of all ages. Often, depression in young people is triggered by events such as a relationship breakup, abuse, illness, a loss in the family, or having to change schools. Sometimes, depression occurs by itself. Depression often runs in families, meaning parents with depression are more likely to have children who suffer from depression.

There are many different forms of depression. Most adolescents with depression have a form of major depression. This form obstructs a person's ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some adolescents may also have a milder form of depression called Dysthymia, which is a long-term form of depression with less severe symptoms than major depression. A rarer but still common form of depression is manic-depressive disorder (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by mood swings from extreme happiness to extreme sadness.

Depression can be a serious problem for young people because their symptoms vary slightly from the symptoms adults commonly have, making it more difficult to recognize and treat. Often, young people with depression will not feel sad or "depressed" as one would expect in adults. Chronic irritability is often one of the major signs of depression in young people. Signs of depression may not be obvious, but may include difficulty sleeping, persistent sadness, tiredness, and decreased interest in activities.

Children with depression may do poorly in school, have trouble making friends, or get in trouble by "acting up," a cry for attention. The effects are also pronounced for teens, who may try alcohol and drugs to escape their mental depression. Depression is not the sufferer's fault, but those with depression can get treatment and learn how to successfully cope with their condition.

Depression treatments can range from counseling and therapy, to the use of antidepressant drugs. Group psychotherapy can be beneficial for teens and children by providing a safe place to share their experience with their peers. Monitored online services such as forums for depressed teens can also provide a source of information for teen depression and serve as a therapy group for the depressed.

Behavioral therapy can help teach people of all ages how to manage their depression. Trained therapists can help parents understand what triggers depression. Family therapy helps educate families on depressive disorders and what they can do to show their support.

In some cases, antidepressants or antipsychotic drugs are prescribed. This is only done under the careful supervision of a doctor who will watch the child's health and mental state. Even though people with depression may need to take medications, these drugs can have undesirable side effects, especially in young people, who are still developing. This is why counseling, support and understanding from families and professional therapists, and the use of treatments that help young people learn how to relieve their depression by themselves are considered better for helping children and teens with depression.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practices can be used to treat stress, tension, and depression. They help people come up with safe and positive coping strategies for handling depression. It works for everyone because it is non-invasive, doesn't call for the use of any drugs, and is a helpful form of self-help therapy.

One NLP technique used to fight depression is known as the NLP Flash. This technique trains your mind to use the feelings that create stress and depression as triggers for thoughts that reduce depression instead. It is a technique that even young people can use to help them cope with their depression.

People who are diagnosed with depression can overcome it. Therapy can help depressed people of all ages find relief. NLP techniques are ideal for helping young people and their families handle stress and depression. These treatments can reduce or even eliminate depression in anyone.

Adolescents frequently have depression, which leaves parents with lots of questions such as: why does it happen, and what can they do for their child? Depression is often treated with various forms of counseling and drugs. However, many parents are using less invasive techniques like Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which has often produced almost miraculous results.
