The Culture of Leadership Thought - Nu Leadership Series

By: Daryl G.

”Wealth in the new regime flows directly from innovation, not optimization; that is, wealth is not gained by perfecting the known, but by imperfectly seizing the unknown.”

Kevin Kelly

People often use the term ‘natural born leader.’ However, we now need to understand that neither leaders nor leadership theory are borne in a
vacuum. We will analyze these variables for impacts on leadership theory.

For this presentation, leadership theory is seen through the cultural framework of the times because leaders make decisions within this constraint. First, Culture in this context is limited to those specific economic, social, and political influences that impact leadership decisions. The technological influence is taken in consideration under the economic variable.

Second, these variables are very integrated. The economic variable relates to the relationship of people and resources. Every society faces economic challenges because of scarcity of resources. Leadership thought has been influenced by this factor because the social allocation of resources are often considered in the decision process.

The social variable then refers to the relationship of people to each other in a society. Since America has undergone several demographic changes, the culture values have also changed. People are forced to work together. Leadership thought is found operating under this cultural parameter.

Finally, the political variable is the relation of the individual to the government and also pertains to the social order of the legal system. Leadership thought is affected by the form of government, by individual rights, and by the ability to appeal within the legal framework. Therefore, we see that leadership thought has changed because our culture has changed, and this has influenced the leadership paradigm.
