The Most Fun I Ever Had!

The Most Fun I Ever Had

The most fun I ever had was when I lived in Toronto. I had gone there to take on a new job and -- accompanying that -- there was lots of excitement: finding a place to live, making new friends, and building a community.

It was at my new job that I met "Cliff". During the course of our 11-year relationship I had more fun than I ever had -- before or since.

Cliff was spontaneous, goofy, outrageous, silly and absolutely unpredictable.

I'm not normally any of those things; in fact, many people would describe me as serious, intense and not much fun at all.

But with Cliff I learned to loosen up, let my hair down, play.

I've missed that in my life. We live on totally different sides of the country now, and there never has been anyone quite like him.

He did the craziest things: one time he filled my car with balloons -- I think it was his idea of a valentine's card. It sure made my two hour drive home interesting!
Another time, he took me rock-climbing. I was wearing high-heeled boots and a long trench coat. But we made it to the top, and the view was exhilarating. I've never been rock climbing since, but I think I'd wear more appropriate foot wear next time.

It was not uncommon for him to surprise me (I'm a very predictable person); like the time I came home and found him sitting in my foyer in a lawn chair with a scotch in each hand. He was wearing nothing but a hat and I burst out laughing the moment I laid eyes on him. He knew I'd had a hard day and was there to take my mind off it -- in a kooky kind of way.

I still have a box of crazy, sexy, wild cards that he sent me -- in it, there are hundreds of little giggles from notes he passed to me during our boring staff meetings. Every once in a while, I pull out that box of cards, take a stroll down memory lane and laugh til I weep.

With him I got to taste life in a whole new way -- they say that variety is the spice of life and mine got very spicy while I was with him. We sat in the hot tub in the middle of snowstorms, sticking our tongues out to catch the flakes as they fell. We made naked snow angels and then jumped into the hot-tub to warm up. I never knew what crazy idea he would come up with. That's what made it interesting.

There were so many things we had in common: we loved blueberry pie, working in the garden, golfing, listening and dancing to 'rock n roll'. Whenever there was a party going on, he was the first one there (and frequently, the last to leave). He was so flexible -- we could be taking a walk in the woods, sharing a popsicle, or just lounging in front of the fire with a good book. We cooked together, shopped for books together, drank lots of wine with friends ... I can't remember a more fun time.

I've often thought about how I could rekindle that same kind of 'joie de vivre' as I had with Cliff.

I'm not sure it's possible. Ours was a once-in-a-lifetime thing and it may never come again for either of us.

But the memories -- oh, the memories -- are (well, as Tony the Tiger would say) they're great!
