The Virtual Church of Jesus Christ

By: Daryl G.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 28:19

Jesus spoke. People listened; Matthew 28:19 reads, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This commission launched a virtual organization, guided by the Holy Spirit. As Christians operated under persecution and in a hostile environment (Acts 28:22), the culture began to shape the organizational structure in the church.

How can a leader guide followers he does not see? This was the physical dilemma of the Apostle Paul. Answering the leadership call, Paul began to create community order and structure through his Pastoral Epistles (1 Timothy 2:1-6:1). In this congregational evolution, Paul did not make a distinction between church culture and structure. They were integrated.

Though the Apostle Paul may have had his own personal vision of this organization, today’s secular businesses continue to build organizations with a global reach but fall short of their expectations. Pascarella, author of Christ Centered Leadership, argues for a shift in organizational thinking where leaders do not separate the spiritual from the secular. As a result of this secular thinking, organizations have created corporate problems in people’s values, feelings, identities, and relationships. Therefore, the consequences of virtual organizations could damage leader-follower relationships. Furthermore, biblical text can provide a blueprint for operating in a virtual environment. Will today’s leaders be willing to listen?
