Thinking about Colour in the Buying of Towels for Hotel Use

By: Mitrehallandletts

The feel of a towel is an obvious signal towards quality in a hotel room, but there is also the look to consider. Style is more about looks than feel. Towels can be used in the decorative design of a room and if style is an important factor in room design then buying towels can be included in the process of selecting room elements (bedding, curtains and so on). In these cases buying from one supplier where all elements can be purchased with matching colours can save time and money in the purchasing process.

This article will briefly explore the question of colour when buying towels for use in a hotel setting.

White or Colour?
An obvious way to economise on the purchasing of towels is to buy white. A white bath towel of 400 GSM can cost as little as £3.50. Whereas a richly coloured towel of exactly the same quality can cost up to £1.00 more. The white towel will hold its colour and can be washed with the use of stronger chemicals, whereas the coloured towel has limitations in its usage, particularly where there are leisure facilities on site.

When developing a colour scheme for a room, however, the choice of colour towels gives the opportunity to bring the room décor into the bathroom. Towels can also be placed upon the bed for arriving guests, allowing colour-matching to bedding and curtains. If a heavier, higher quality towel is chosen then this placement of the towel ‘in’ the room adds to the welcome and utilises the higher-quality towel as a promotion of higher standards.

Colour matching need not be the only way to go, contrasting colours can also add to a room décor, richly coloured bedding can be tempered with lighter coloured towels and vice-versa.

The choice of colour need not add so significantly to the cost either. Lighter coloured towels such as cream and beige are cheaper than rich colours like navy and chocolate, and can be more flexible if rooms are decorated differently or the décor is changed.

If there are leisure facilities on site then colour is an important factor in selecting towels. If they are to be used in a gym, pool or spa environment the colours must be resistant to the colour loss inevitable in a chlorine environment. Vat-dyed blues are a good choice here. Yet even white towels must be selected with care for use in such environments – they must be bleach resistant. Here the provision of towels that have the look of a leisure towel can save on damage to standard towels (blue stripes or the use of labelling on the towel header bar i.e. ‘Leisure’ can achieve this safeguard).

Types of Cotton
Finally, there is the perhaps surprising question of where the cotton comes from. Egyptian cotton will not only give a higher quality to a towel, offering greater softness and durability, it will also hold its colour longer than cheaper cottons. Economising on colour towels can mean that with repeated laundering the savings are lost in a one-use, one-wash setting like a hotel. Egyptian cotton is made with longer fibres that can be woven together to make longer, finer threads which make for a more stable, tight weave which can absorb more dye to give longer lasting colours and absorb more water in the wash.

The feel of a towel is an obvious signal towards quality in a hotel room, but there is also the look to consider. Style is more about looks than feel.
