Swallowing difficulties, known medically as dysphagia, can happen for a number of different reasons and affect young and old alike. Swallowing is a complex process that requires the action of reflexes predominately occurring in the pharynx and oesophagus but also in the brain. With the exception of dysphagia caused by strokes (which does tend to improve), there are various ways that painful swallowing can be treated and the treatment usually results in stable and progressive improvement.
Michiel Van Kets writes about Rosemont, a team of medicine experts supplying medicines for those who have difficulties swallowing. Some swallowing problems are caused by dysphagia, xerostomia or an aversion to pills, whereas some have difficulty in swallowing because of cancer or stroke.
