What Indian Cricket Team Needs to Do to Win the World Cup?

The cricket world cup tournament is an international level competition where good teams from all over the world participate. There will be no favorites to win the world cup, particularly in the later stages (quarters and semis). It’s an achieving team that finally wins the cup. A team becomes achieving only when each and every player contributes positively to overcome obstacles and challenges involved in the tournament.

The popularity of an individual player has little to do with winning the world cup. A half-century, century or a 5-wicket haul by an individual are important. However, achieving personal records by compromising the team's results has to be discouraged. We must stop emphasizing on statistics achieved in such way. We should recognize and reward the performances which focus on overcoming challenges and winning the matches.

The opposition team will always be ready with a strategy to face a predictable play. In order to tackle the strategic play imposed by the opponents, the team has to proactively come up with surprising performances. We need to recognize and encourage the variety as long as the player is committed to win the match. For this, the player requires strong cricketing mind, ability to handle the pressure and innovative thinking.

Cricket is a team game. Victory in a team game comes with a positive contribution of each and every team member. It is very likely to expect senior players to pick up major challenges and inspire juniors with their contributing performance. They need to perform when the team needs. Sometimes, they may even have to risk their reputation to deliver such accomplishments. It will be unfair to expect less competent players to win the match when the most talented of the team are reluctant or fail to perform. We need to recognize and reward those who don’t run away from challenges and play for the team victory.

Excellence is not doing extraordinary things, but doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. One may not be able to hit six sixes or create records in every match. However excellence is when he does 100 basic things well in the match. A team wins when each and every member from last specialist batsmen to the weakest fielder, 5th change bowler to the 12th man, the physiologist, the manager and the cricket board, shows excellence and takes care of even small basic things.

Great and champion reputations are built by performing in tough situations; not in easy times or in less demanding situations. The quality of a batsman is judged by how well he plays against the world’s best bowlers. A champion player is a lead performer – someone who repeatedly performs extremely well in diverse situations (don’t confuse this with good looking statistics). This could be scoring 9 runs of 4 balls against a tough bowler or conceding just 2 runs in an over against a very good batsman or diving to his wrong end to stop a single. Such performances with an attitude to win not only inspire other players to increase their standards but also boost the morale which is quite necessary to win the cup.

In contrary, a player playing to the galleries is in fact helping the opposition team to win the match. Many times, crowds fail to recognize champion performance from non-champion performance, and just go with the deceiving looks of the statistics.

From the first match till the last bowl of the finals, the team needs to consistently perform well by respecting the opposition’s strengths. The team needs to perform on each and every ball or match out-thinking and outperforming every competitor.
