What to do in Manchester on a holiday

If you have never been to Manchester then it is time you booked a hotel and visited. Known as the Capital of the North the city today is a prosperous thriving destination and the third most visited city in the UK.

Manchester has always been known as an industrial city with its production of textiles and the cotton mills. You will still be able to see the remains of this industry all over the city in its architecture and canals. The city is also renowned for its canals which are now experiencing a rejuvenation as a popular method of travelling around the city and also for the water-side restaurants.

During the past ten years Manchester city centre has experienced a revival as money from various sources, including funds provided for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, flooded into the city to update and modernize it, nowadays the city centre is unrecognizable and a fashionable and trendy place to visit.

If you are planning to do some shopping, then don’t miss out on the largest shopping centre in the UK. The Arndale Centre has been the last part of the city centre to receive major renovations and now proudly offers thousands of shops under one roof.

Manchester now is a chic and trendy destination with designs featuring glass and steel to the traditional Victorian structures and contemporary architecture. Take a stroll down to Albert Square and you can lay your eyes on the cities Town Hall, built in a gothic revival style and a significant Victorian building. Although no competition to London or Birmingham, the city has its own skyscrapers with the CIS Tower being the tallest and The Beetham Tower which comprises of a Hilton hotel, a restaurant, and apartments.

Manchester is easy to get to as it has its own airport with regular train links to the city centre. The city has two train stations; Piccadilly is the main station and provides links to all the major routes around the UK. The city also provides a train system known as the Metrolink which is a good way to explore the centre or reach nearby districts.

Manchester is a cultural city and many famous musicians have come from here, including The Smiths, The Buzzcocks, The Fall, New Order, Oasis, The Doves, Take That and Simply Red. The Manchester Evening News Arena is the largest of its kind in Europe and regularly has popular musicians and pop artists performing. Live music and concerts are held all over the city from the Manchester Academy and the Manchester Apollo, to the more intimate settings of Night and Day Café and the Roadhouse.
The Manchester Opera House puts on major touring and West End shows, The Palace Theatre, the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Lowry Centre are all major cultural venues. The Bridgewater Hall holds classical music concerts and more intimate evenings and is host to Manchester’s two orchestras, The Hallé Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The city of Manchester has two universities, The University of Manchester and UMIST, and during term time the city is buzzing with people and activities. People visit from all over the country at weekends and then it really does become ‘Madchester’. The Canal Street area is famous for being the centre of the city’s gay community, set beside the canal it is a popular drinking area for everyone.

Manchester is also the city of sport. Most people have heard of Manchester United and Manchester City, both with their stadiums in the city centre. The City of Manchester Stadium that was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games is now the proud home of Manchester City, whilst Manchester United’s grounds are situated at the legendary Trafford Park. A high standard of sporting amenities were built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, including the Manchester Aquatics Centre and The Manchester Velodrome.

Any person visiting Manchester will find something of interest. This fascinating and trendy destination has something to offer all types of people and you will probably find yourself returning again and again to discover more of it.
