Why Should I Switch To Digital Photography

By: Carol Miller

If you are hestitating about buying a digital camera, read this article. As a hobbyist, I have two film cameras, an old manual focus Nikon and a newer autofocus Canon Rebel, and I resisted the temptation to indulge in a digital camera up until lately, even though each of my children had naturally been using them for years. But recently my dad gave me his mid-level Olympus (he found the menus hard to follow), and I've been trying it out. And, to my delight, I even like it.

My number one favorite element about the camera is obvious no film. My father gave me two (bless him) substantial memory cards, and I can take an amazing amount of pictures before running out of storage. I dont have developing expenses for photos that I dont really want now that Ive seen them (I dont pay to develop photos period), and since I can take a look at the shot right after I took it, I can purge pictures I don't like to save the storage for more. Shooting lots of pictures helps me improve, and improves the odds of a really nice shot as well, and with digital it doesn't cost a cent. My camera has settings on it that let me to pretend I have film I can set film speed and adjust aperture/shutter speed combinations the same as with my other cameras, so I can still use my prior experience with photography, which is fine with me. And I love not having to wait to see how the pictures came out.

An additional great benefit of digital picture-taking is photo editing. I havent sprung for Photoshop at this point, but I have been looking at the Elements program during the next year or so. I simply use Googles free Picasa and once in a while my PhotoDeluxe editor (I got it with my scanner), and just with these I can do an awesome number of great things with my photos. One of my favorite features is being able to change incorrect exposures (It's a sad fact that I don't always notice backlit situations). Now with a little adjusting, I can save these shots! I correct red-eye quickly, sharpen a photo, alter contrast, reduce or intensify colors, and fix excessive unwanted tint (such as from lamplight). Cropping is my favorite if you have a darkroom, you have no doubt cropped your shots all along, but us regular folks used to just live with how we framed the shot no longer! We can select what we want, and glory in cropping unnecessary background, too much sky and turning the shot into a closeup is effortless. Resizing is a snap want some wallets? No big deal. 8x10, 4x6, some oddball size an easy click will do it for you And dont forget special effects. Depending on the editor, you can turn your photo into a painting, add glow, filters, neon the only limits are your imagination and your software!

When your photo is just how you want, you can choose to print it on special photo paper on your own printer, or you can send it out for processing. Through Picasa, you can click and send it to a processor via the internet, and get your professionally printed photos in the mail but you only buy and send those you choose. You can upload your photos to a webpage, email them, use them in a blog or on MySpace they are easy to share.

In short, I have been happily won over to digital photography. There is so much fun in having this kind of control over your work that it has actually rejuvenated my love of photography. If you are still holding back, I recommend you just plunge right in. It's a real hoot.

See why a stubborn film photography amateur became an advocate of digital photography. If you're considering making the switch, this might help you make that decision.
