Things did not start out well for the franchise- the team was born in 1946 and was initially based in the tri-city area. When the NBA was officially formed, the team was moved to Wisconsin and despite having a strong line-up they were one of the worst teams in the league. In 1955, the team was moved yet again to Missouri. Two years later in 1957, things changed drastically for the Hawks. With the help of free agency and some choice draft picks, the Hawks went from bottom of the barrel to top of the pile.

This period proved to be one of the Hawks' best. While the team took in a conference title in 1957, they went on to snag their first championship win the following year. This proved to be the only championship title the Hawks have won till date. For the next ten years, the Hawks were one of the strongest teams in the entire league.

Welcome To Atlanta

The Hawks were certainly doing well on the court but things were not so rosy on the sidelines. The team's current home turf was in bad condition, not having any kind of proper maintenance since the forties. Management repeatedly approached the city for a new home stadium but their requests were denied. Frustrated with these developments, the team was finally sold to Atlanta in 1968. Basketball fans were already looking forward to getting their Atlanta Hawks tickets because the Hawks were a hot team on the courts. The team did not disappoint. The Hawks seemed to be in their prime and they had a great new stadium to play in. Atlanta Hawks tickets were flying high, right along with the Hawks.

The seventies saw a dip in performance as the Hawks concentrated on rebuilding their team. They made some smart choices and by the eighties, they were back in form as one the elite teams in the NBA. In 1999, the team acquired Isaiah Rider who's on and off-court behavioral antics forced the team to release him from his contract.
